Welcome to Year 3.
Throughout the Autumn term, our 'Flow of Life' unit will spark and develop children’s curiosity about both the natural world and the origins of human civilisation. Through a cross-curricular approach, we will delve into the fascinating development of early Ancient Civilisations, uncovering how these societies flourished around major rivers such as the Nile. Children will explore how access to water shaped agriculture, trade, culture, and the rise of cities. In Geography, we will examine the vital role of water in supporting life and enabling human settlement. In Science, our focus will be on rocks, soils, and the Earth's layers. Children will explore how different types of rocks are formed and how natural processes like erosion and weathering shape the environment. They will learn how environments shape lives, how beliefs influence decisions, and how creativity and technology help us respond to challenges.
Throughout the term, our writing will be inspired by a range of rich stimuli, including the text Gilgamesh the King and our research into the ancient Mesopotamian epic of Gilgamesh. Children will explore different genres of writing, developing their skills through tasks such as vivid setting descriptions that bring ancient worlds to life, and detailed non-chronological reports that present factual information about early civilisations in an engaging and informative way.
Further information about our adventures and learning as well as specific news and notices will be shared through Arbor and the newsletter.
Key Information
-
Your child will need a pair of indoor school shoes that will be kept in school. Your child will change into these when entering school in the morning and after each outdoor session, ie daily mile and playtimes. On any particular day your child will only need one pair of outdoor shoes that they change from. If it is a reasonably dry day your child’s outdoor footwear could be trainers or boots. If it is a snowy/wet day your child’s outdoor footwear could be wellies. Please just have the outdoor footwear suitable for the weather that particular day. We do not need to have wellies kept in school all of the time because we can’t house so many different items of footwear for each child.
-
PE activities will take place on a Wednesday and Friday. Please can your child have a pump bag with the contents of black shorts/black tracksuit bottoms, white/red t-shirt and black pumps (for indoor) and trainers (for outdoor). This pump bag is to be kept in school. It will be sent home each half term for a refresh!
-
Every other Friday (see calendar), we will continue to have the wonderful opportunity of Forest School. We will aim to go out in all weather (unless torrential rain). Your child will need to bring a bag with the contents of waterproof trousers/waterproof all in one suit, waterproof warm coat and wellies. Your child will bring this bag home on the same day. The dates for Forest School are on the School Spider Calendar.

The children have already been given and brought home a reading book and reading diary. Please ensure that your child has their reading book & diary in school every day so that your child’s book can be changed when needed. Please read daily at home and record in the diary when you have listened to your child read - regular practice is important to gain confidence, knowledge and speed in reading. Your child’s book will not be changed if a comment has not been recorded in their diary.
